The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has initiated moves to streamline telecom tariff plans among operators and service providers. The aim is to ensure transparency and attain consumer-friendly atmosphere in the sector.
These were parts of the disclosures by NCC’s Director of Consumer Affairs Bureau, Ikechukwu Adinde, at a meeting for upskilling on trends in telecom industry for media stakeholders in Lagos.
While highlighting the challenges associated with the current tariff system, Adinde stressed that the abundance of promotional elements and plan add-ons often leaves consumers overwhelmed and unable to select plans that best suit their needs.

To avoid the obvious complexities, the NCC aims to streamline options, to enable consumers clearly understand and compare what is available. With fewer choices, people can make informed decisions with confidence, Adinde stated.
He added; “The NCC’s data shows the extent of the challenge; one network currently has 14 voice plans and 145 data plans, while another has 27 voice plans and 41 data plans. By reducing these options, NCC seeks to simplify the market and enhance consumer satisfaction. The initiative also aims to tackle data depletion concerns”.
He encouraged consumers to actively monitor their data usage, explaining that NCC’s educational campaigns and online resources now provide guidance on data management and cost effective usage.
Adinde stressed that through publishing approved tariff plans on our website and providing data usage tips, NCC is dedicated to improving consumer awareness.
According to him, with the new arrangement, the NCC anticipates a more consumer-friendly telecom landscape, prioritising transparency and ease of use for Nigerians navigating data and voice options.
