Lagos donates 260 to police to enhance security logistics statewide

Lagos, the richest state by internally generated revenue (of N60 billion per month), has donated 260 vehicles to the police to enhance security efficiency, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has laid the foundation for the redevelopment of the Ijeh Police Barracks in Obalende to provide 2,200 modern housing units for officers.

Sanwo-Olu on Thursday also handed over other security equipment to the police and other supporting security agencies.

He noted at the foundation-laying event that the project underscored the state’s commitment to addressing the housing deficit and improving the welfare of security personnel.

“Today is a day for our law enforcement officers because two of the activities that we are engaging in today are for their welfare and our collective security and safety of lives and property,” he said.

“This transformative redevelopment project to provide 2,200 modern housing units at the Ijeh Police Barracks, Obalende is part of intervention aimed at bridging housing deficit and provide a modern, safe housing and conducive living environment for the officers of the Nigeria Police Force and their families all over the country.

“For decades, this barracks stood as a symbol of resilience, sheltering countless officers who have dedicated their lives to protecting our state. However, the wear and tear of time, coupled with insufficient maintenance, led to severe structural dilapidation.”

He stressed that the project symbolises “our unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life for those who serve and protect us.”

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun said the groundbreaking ceremony marked a significant milestone in the history of the Nigeria Police, and “today, we celebrate another chapter in our journey towards modernisation and excellence.”

He expressed gratitude to Sanwo-Olu and all other stakeholders who made the project possible.

Sanwo-Olu had earlier announced at the Annual Town Hall on Security that “in a tangible demonstration of our unwavering commitment to bolstering law enforcement, we will be handing over 260 vehicles and other critical equipment to our security agencies today.

“This ensures that our personnel have the tools they need to respond swiftly and effectively to security challenges.”

The Town Hall was also attended by Egbetokun and other security stakeholders.
