Gbenga Daniel alerts South West youths shunning recruitment, appeals to parents

Senator Gbenga Daniel (APC, Ogun East) has expressed concern the South West has the lowest rate of enlistment in the military and police, wondering why youths in the zone would shun the opportunity to help protect the country.

Daniel, former Ogun Governor who now chairs the Senate Committee on the Navy, was speaking at a programme organised by the Ogun Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abeokuta.

He appealed to parents to allow their children join the security services, pitching that military service once labeled as a job for “miscreants” in the 1960s and 1970s, has since produced leaders who have contributed immensely to Nigeria’s politics and  economy.

“As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Navy, I have seen firsthand our [South West] people’s lackadaisical approach to enlistment into this noble service,” he said.

“A lot of positive things are happening in the Nigerian Navy on a daily basis, and I want to urge parents to stop discouraging their wards from joining the military and paramilitary services.”

Daniel disclosed he has sponsored 11 bills since he became a rookie Senator in the 10th National Assembly (NASS) last year, which are at different stages of the legislative process.

He listed the bills to include those on:

  • The South West Development Commission
  • Federal College of Aviation Technology, Ilara Remo
  • Terminal illness Trust
  • Media Practitioners Registration Council
  • Hospices Establishment
  • Constitution of the Federal Of Nigeria Birth Right

If passed and assent to by the President, Daniel enthused, the South West Development Commission Bill now at second reading, would provide further boost for the regional economy of the South West.

He disclosed 3,000 people have benefitted from his empowerment schemes and medical initiatives – which he said include free eyes treatment, provision of reading glasses, tractors for farmers, grants and loans for traders, market women, as well as sewing machines and working tools for artisans.
