Former President, Muhammadu Buhari has said for Nigeria to get out of its current “economic quagmire”, the country must control its population growth, while its citizens must embrace farming.
He gave the advice on Sunday in Kastina while participating in the Kofor Arewa Eid prayer.
Buhari, while speaking at the event, expressed delight that a considerable number of Nigerians have embraced farming once again.
He, however, expressed deep concern over the unchecked rise in population within the nation, insisting the situation calls for urgent attention.
The Kastina State-born general turned politician further advised the President Bola Tinubu-led government to invest more in education and health.
He went on to say for the country to get better, Nigerians must stop buying imported products and focus more on goods made locally.
Buhari said: “The need for greater discussion and awareness about this problem, (uncontrolled population growth) as well as a need to invest more in education and health.
“Let us grow our own food. We have shown that we can do it. This is not the time to relent when we see prices going up. Let us buy what is produced in the country.
“The foundation of a prosperous and stable country has been laid by successive governments, and I encourage our youth, in particular, to continue to play an active role in various nation-building efforts.”
