Search engine giant, Google, has developed a new tool to help journalists and publishers track stories on their platforms real-time.

The new tool called Real-Time Content Insight (RCI) allows publishers and journalists to know what is happening on their site at this moment and on helping them identify trending news stories that could attract more readers.

“It’s turning raw data into business intelligence and actionable insights,” says Adam Harding, Google’s head of analytics, revenue optimization and head of publisher development.

RCI presents the data in the form of an image-heavy dashboard, showing how many readers are looking at a story presently and how many views the story has gotten in the last 30 minutes.

Publishers can also see how their sites are performing today, compared to normal day’s traffic. It can also break traffic by geography and referral sources.

The dashboard also shows topics currently trending on Google and Twitter.

“What people are curious about on Google and what people are talking about on Twitter,” Harding said.

Last year, Google announced a $300 million news initiative, which included funding for independent journalism efforts alongside products developed by Google.
