Yobe govt boosts education with N1.3b

Yobe State government has paid N1, 330, 011, 227.00 as counterpart fund for the joint State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB)/ Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) projects for 2015 and 2016.

State Information Commissioner, Alhaji Mala Musty, disclosed this after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Ibrahim Gaidam.

He said that the measure would go further along in ensuring that education projects jointly undertaken by State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB)  and UBEC in primary and junior secondary schools across the state proceed unhindered.

The commissioner added that the state EXCO also approved N289, 500, 000.00 for 28 academic staff of the state university (YSU) to pursue post-graduate studies in institutions of learning outside the country.

As part of continuing effort to improve infrastructure and services on the YSU campus also, the state government approved the construction of a 1.6 kilometre road with 3.2 km long drainage line at the cost of N238 million.

The education sector also got further attention with the approval of N55.6 million and N72.3 million for additional renovation works at Government Girls College Nguru and GSS Nangere, respectively. The two schools are currently undergoing major upgrade and expansion by the state government.

Other decisions taken by the state EXCO include the spending of N91 million for the supply and installation of furniture to the newly constructed male and female wards as well as theatre complex, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit, central sterilization and supply department, pharmacy department, and the haematology laboratory of the state Specialist Hospital, Damaturu.

The Yobe State Executive Council also approved N735 million for the construction of a 2.09km township road and a 4.18km drainage line from the State Hotel Junction through the Presidential Lodge to Commissioners’ Quarters in Damaturu metropolis.

The state government will also build a multi-purpose 750 seat-capacity hall at the Government House at the cost of N196.3 million.
