Yahaya Bello regains freedom after months of drama

Yahaya Bello, former Kogi Governor has been released from Kuje Custodial Centre after perfecting the bail conditions set by the Federal High Court in Abuja where he is facing trial over alleged fraud worth billions of naira while in office.

The case had involved drama for months as Bello tried to avoid arraignment until the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested him.

His release on bail was confirmed by Nigerian Correctional Service, FCT Command spokesman Adamu Duza.

“Yahaya Bello has been released after meeting bail conditions. He was released this (Friday) evening,” he told The PUNCH.

“The Controller of NCoS FCT, Ajibogun Olatubosun, was on [the] ground to ensure his smooth release and all protocols observed.”

Bello was granted bail on Thursday by Justice MaryAnne Anenih in the sum of  N500 million and three sureties, each owning property in the high-value areas of Abuja, such as Maitama, Guzape, or Asokoro.

He was also ordered to release his passport to restrict his travel outside Nigeria without prior permission.

Bello, along with Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalam Hudu, faces a 16-count charge of conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and unlawful possession of property, filed by the EFCC.

All three have pleaded not guilty.
