A Civil Society Organization, Divine Era Development and Social Rights Initiative (DEDASRI). has expressed worry over menstruation poverty among school girls in the country.
The Programs Manager of DEDSSRI, Obiajulu Ugwu, stated this during the commemoration of this year’s World Day For Menstrual Hygiene held at Day Secondary School, Independence Layout Enugu on Tuesday.
She said that many girls usually miss school during their menstrual period due to lack of money to buy sanitary pad thereby resulting to unhygienic practices.
She said, “It is in view of this that Divine Era embarked on sensitization exercise to different schools in the state to sensitize girls on importance of menstrual hygiene as well as distribute sanitary pads to the students.
“As we all know that some of these girls cannot afford to buy sanitary pad to use during menstruation so we are targeting over 1,000 girls to benefit from this gesture as well as educate them on menstrual hygiene.”
Ugwu explained to the school girls that menstrual period is a circle of 22 to 35 days where blood flows from a girl virgina and usually lasts for 4 to 7 days hence the need to maintain good menstrual hygiene and stay away from opposite sex relationship that could destroy their future.
Responding, the Principal of Day Secondary School, Nnanwike-Nwodo Maria, commended Divine Era for sensitizing the students on menstrual hygiene.
The highlight of the occasion was the distribution of sanitary pads to the girls students as well as donation to the school to be used in emergency case during school hours.
