Ace Nigeria singer and songwriter,

Ayodeji Balogun, better known as Wizkid has said he might have taken to a life of crime had he not chosen a career in music.

The Grammy Award winner made this known in a recent interview with The Guardian, where he said he began music as a choir in his granddad’s church alongside his cousins.

Wizkid went on to say he grew up in a ‘chaotic but fun house’ dominated by women in Surulere and that he is the only son of his mum and the youngest of 11 children.

He also noted that though Surulere, is considered a middle-class area, it is not devoid of crime, leaving him with options of either turning to music or embracing a life of vices.

According to the 30-year-old old, faced with two clear options, he chose music which was initially a hobby as an escape route from a life of crime.

Wizkid said, “Music was more than a hobby for me, more than a talent. It was my escape. I was in the hood. It was either [music] or turn to crime. That’s why I don’t joke with music,”

Meanwhile, Wizkid while honouring the late son of his colleague, Davido, has decided to move his album’s release date.
