WHO appoints wife of Niger governor member of Technical Advisory Group for Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative

The wife of the Niger State Governor, Dr Amina Abubakar Bello – Founder of Raise Foundation – has emerged among the 15 persons invited by the World Health Organization, WHO,  to

serve as a member of the Expert Group for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer Initiative.

The committee members will serve for a period of two years and eligibility for reappointment.

 According to the Chief Press Secretary to the governor’s wife, Aisha Wakaso, said, ” the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus,  said members invited are to serve on an individual capacity.”

Besides, she said that the 15 persons were requested to give the WHO the benefit of their knowledge and expertise especially with regards to the countries in which they were working.

“The committee members were selected individuals globally with consideration for technical distribution of expertise, geographical representation and gender balance.”

It would be recalled that in May 2018, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a call to action towards the elimination of cervical cancer.

The Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative of the WHO is aimed at equipping member-states with the resources and technology required to meet the global target of cervical cancer elimination as a public health problem.

Wakaso stated that the functions of the committee include to review, from a strategic and technical standpoint, the content, scope and dimensions of the activities of the Initiative, including the research areas covered and approaches to be adopted.

“To provide independent evaluation of the scientific and technical aspects of the Initiative, recommend priorities’ within the Initiative; and to review resource mobilization and advocacy approaches for the Initiative.”
