The messaging giant, WhatsApp, is reportedly testing fingerprint and facial recognition technology in its latest update.

A report monitored by WABetaInfo, a source known to have monitored WhatsApp closely, said the platform is working on a number of features which include redesigned emojis.

The new facial and fingerprint-authentication feature comes with version 2.19.21 which is still in the works.

When activated, the feature is expected to function on the app locker. Anyone who opens the app will be asked to scan his/her fingerprint or allow the front-facing camera to authenticate the user.

WhatsApp has been working on its fingerprint authentication feature since this month but not yet ready.

This comes after a new messaging app, Yeo, announced that it has completed testing a facial recognition and geo-fencing technology which allows the sender to determine when and where a recipient views a message,

Tech analysts believe Yeo is the next big thing in messaging technology because it gives the sender power to remote-delete files, photos and messages in the recipient’s app.

Yeo is touted to upstage WhatsApp in the near future. The founders Alan Jones and daughter, Sarah Norford-Jones, have said they do not intend to take on WhatsApp but rather want to put the power into the sender’s hands.
