Violent attacks on Tin Can Island Port leaves 4 MWUN members dead

LASPGC officials allegedly stormed the port corridor with dangerous weapons and engaged the trucking unions in fierce battle.

No fewer than four members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) have been killed over alleged attack by members of the Lagos State Park and Garage Committee (LASPGC) at Tin Can Island Port Lagos State

It was gathered that members of LASPGC on Tuesday, invaded the port’s corridor at National Bus Stop by dislodging members of truckers’ unions and commenced issuance of tickets to truck drivers at the second-gate axis of the Tin-Can Island Port in Apapa.

Our Source was told that the brawl disrupted port operations and movement within the port and its environs , as port users, commuters and other ancillary services were halted for hours.

When contacted, Chairman, Haulage District Branch, MWUN, Comrade Taofeek Biodun confirmed that four unit members were killed in the said attack adding that three of them have been buried while one of the corpse was deposited at the morgue.

According to Daily Focus Nigeria, the identities of the late unit members of the Haulage District Branch of MWUN include: Comrade Michelle Umoh, Comrade Tosin Ogunfeyi, Comrade Fatai Abdul Kareem and one other, simply identified as Comrade Chukwuma.

It was also gathered that members of LASPGC stormed the port corridor in the early hours with dangerous weapons and engaged the trucking unions in fierce battle.

Sources confirmed that the chairman of the haulage branch was the group’s major target but according to him, he was off duty the day the said attack took place.

Taofeek alleged further that some members were also injured during the fracas with the Lagos State group.

The Chairman explained that members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers NURTW had pleaded with him to join their group but he declined their offer in participating in the road transport workers activities at Tin Can Island Port corridor.

The MWUN is yet to react on the invasion and killing of members as at weekend allegedly by members of the LASPGC.
