Tragedy struck at Alaife Umuaku, Uli in Ihiala council of Anambra State, when a 34-year-old man was killed by a bullet from a gun carried by a vigilante operative, Chinedu Ibeanozie, allegedly by mistake.
Ibeanozie’s gun was said to have accidentally discharged a bullet.
The deceased, Lotachukwu Nwagboso of Ndikpo Umuaku Uli, a Disc Jockey (DJ) and father of four, was said to have gone to the community to play music for the burial ceremony of one Evangelist Vitalis Ihemeje, but was allegedly killed by the suspect, who took to his immediately the accident happened.
It was however gathered that the suspect had put a gun on his motorcycle with the mussle pointing out, and in attempt to start the bike, the gun went off, killing the deceased on the spot.
Eyewitness said that the death sparked off outrage as youths of Ndikpo went on rampage, destroying property and pulling down houses belonging to the suspect and those of the family organising the burial ceremony of their father.
In his reaction, the elder brother to the suspect, Ifeanyi Ibeanozie, said that they were friends to the bereaved family, hence their commitment to ensure the success of the burial.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Princess Nkiruka Nwode, who confirmed the, called on community leaders to be mindful of the kind of people they appoint as vigilante and implored the people to give the police information that will help them apprehend the suspect.
