The presidential campaign rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was on Monday, October 17, attacked by stick-wielding thugs.

The PDP rally, held at one of the stadia in Kaduna, was attended by a huge crowd of supporters, and those who wanted to disrupt it.

Videos from the scene of the PDP rally showed thugs beating people who gathered at the event, causing them to run helter-skelter. The rally attendees also fought back until security operatives later came to restore normalcy.

The presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, took to his Twitter page to condemn the attack on the rally. He described it as undemocratic and against the peace accord signed.

He said: “I have just received emergency reports of attacks on @OfficialPDPNig supporters by thugs sponsored to scuttle the ongoing PDP campaign rally in Kaduna State. This is undemocratic and against the Peace Accord all parties signed up for just a few weeks ago.

“I urge President Muhammadu Buhari to call on all parties to call their supporters and members to order and to ensure that campaigns, just as with the elections themselves, are kept free, fair and safe.”

After normalcy was restored, Atiku later tweeted, commending the efforts of security agents in restoring order.

He said: “I wish to commend the efforts of security agents and our supporters in foiling the attempt of agents of anti-democratic forces to disrupt the Kaduna @OfficialPDPNig campaign. Notwithstanding, the rally marked a huge turnout and was a huge success. –AA”
