Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu, representing Imo North (APC) in the National Assembly, has pledged suport to the Federal Government’s efforts at check-mating xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
He said, “The Federal Government has my full support and that of the Senate in taking every measure necessary to tackle the rising waves of Xenophobic attacks in South Africa.”
Uwajumogu, via a press statement, pointed out: “Since previous efforts to engage the South African government on these attacks have yielded no gain, the onus is now on the Federal Government of Nigeria to change tactics and strategies, and make a profound statement.”
Uwajumogu, who is the chairman of Senate Committee on Labour and Productivity, said that the South Africans were intolerant and spiteful of Nigerians.
He reminded the South Africans that Nigeria gave its all for their freedom from Apartheid, while lamenting: “My heart bled when I heard the news of the the unfortunate incident, where hundreds of Nigerians in South Africa are being mobbed, harrased, some maimed and killed, and their properties looted and vandalised.
“Some are subjected to all forms of indignities, all in the name of envy, hate and prejudice, while the security agencies in that country were either complicit or they watched helplessly.
“I hereby call on the Federal Government to step in with immediate effect by protecting the lives of Nigerians, and also exploit all continental and international diplomatic instruments available to engage South Africa.
“Enough is enough.”
The Senator also condemned the attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, while describing the development as “wicked and shameless.”
