A US court has ordered the FBI to arrest a former commander of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Abba Kyari, over allegations of aiding Ramon Abbass, popularly known as Hushpuppi, in multiple frauds.
Hushpuppi entered a plea bargain with the US government and pleaded guilty to all the allegations of fraud levelled against him.
As part of the plea bargain deal, Hushpuppi promised to cooperate with US investigators.
He gave the investigators in the US names of some of his accomplices in Nigeria, one of whom is Abba Kyari, a man many believed was being groomed to become police Inspector General by 2023,
Otis Wright of the United States District Court for the Central District of California ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation to track down Kyari and produce him in the United States for his role in the multi-million dollar fraud.
The FBI said Hushpuppi and Kyari have been friends and were both involved in a conspiracy to launder money.
According to Peoples Gazettes, American prosecutors first sought a court warrant to arrest Kyari on February 12, 2021, citing court documents.
Hushpuppi claimed that he bribed Kyari to have one of his rivals arrested and jailed in Nigeria following a dispute over how to share $1.1million they defrauded a Qatari businessperson.
Hushpuppi, it was reported, asked Kyari to arrest and jail Kelly Chibuzor Vincent, a fellow fraudster who wanted to play a fast move with the $1.1million loot received from the Qatari businessperson.
Kyari, has, however, denied the allegation.
