The Vice Chancellor of University of Calabar (Unical), Prof. Florence Obi, has refuted claims that the university banned worship centres on its campus.
She made this known on Thursday at a meeting organised by the Chapel of Redemption, Unical campus, where she clarified that the school authority only developed a policy to regulate the establishment of worship centres within the campus.
The VC argued that the move was in line with the Federal Government’s policy on the creation of fellowships and churches within its establishments.

She further said Unical already has worship centers such as the Catholic Church, Protestant Chapel and a mosque, adding that it cannot accommodate all churches and mosques inside its premises.
”These religious organisations are given land to build their worship centres within the university campus. We cannot allocate space to every church in town,” Prof. Obi said.
She went on to add that staff or students who cannot worship in any of the approved centres on campus are free to attend churches and mosques outside the campus.
Prof. Obi, however, warned that fellowships are not allowed in the classrooms.
”We don’t allow fellowships in the classrooms; this can cause a lot of distractions,” she further said.
