The 1994 law class of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has called for an independent probe of sexual harassment allegations levelled against the dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Cyril Ndifon.

On Monday, students of the faculty protested against Ndifon at the office of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Florence Banku-Obi, carrying placards. A video of their protest went viral on social media.

On their placards were written, “Ndifon must go for our sanity”, “We are tired of buying law journals”, “We are tired of lecturers not attending classes”, and “Law girls are not your bonanza; Prof. Ndifon should stop grabbing us and others.”

Ndifon has since dismissed the allegations, describing the protest as one orchestrated by individuals within the faculty who held a grudge against him.

In a statement dated August 16, made available to TheNiche and signed by the chairman of the 1994 law class, Obo Effanga, and secretary, Dandy Nwankwo, the alumni said they were “highly embarrassed” that the faculty they graduated from over 30 years ago and pride themselves with has been riddled with such allegations.

The alumni also said it is “more appalling” that this is the second of such major allegations against Ndifon in the space of four years.

“Members of the UNICAL Law Class of 1994 believe that the allegations call for an immediate, full-scale, detailed and independent investigation to ascertain the truth and mete out appropriate sanctions based on the findings,” the statement said.

They called on the management of the university, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the National Association of Law Teachers to immediately launch investigations with a view to ascertaining the truth in the matter.

“This would also give the learned professor an opportunity to come clean and clear himself of any allegations of impropriety,” the statement added.
