The member representing Ideato Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Ikenga Ugochinyere and former Senator Dino Melaye have hailed the suspension of the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Iliyasu Umar Damagum by a faction of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
Ugochinyere, who is the spokesperson of Nigeria’s Opposition Lawmakers Coalition, also congratulated the National Treasurer of the party, Yayari Ahmed on his emergence as PDP Acting Chairman, saying his emergence is a bold step towards rescuing the party.
On Friday, a faction of the PDP NWC announced the suspension of Damagum via a statement signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary. The statement read; “Sequel to vacancy that originated as a result of the suspension of the Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and few others. Yayari, been the highest-ranking officer in the NWC from the North, naturally assumed the position pending the upcoming NEC meeting where the North Central Zone will be allowed to produce a substantive Chairman for the Party.”
Ugochinyere in a statement said with the exit of Damagum, the NEC meeting is set to see the emergence of a substantive Chairman from North Central on October 24, 2024
He said, “The news of Damagum suspension is a welcome development, there’s jubilation everywhere, PDP faithful, supporters and stakeholders are very happy with this development. Damagum has been working with our enemies to destroy the party and render it incapable of contesting the 2027 elections.
“With the removal of Damagum, the transformation of PDP will begin, as the party has faced many setbacks and challenges due to Damagum anti-party activities and frolicking with the party’s enemy Nyesom Wike. I urge PDP Governors and stakeholders to meet to stop Damagum who is an APC agent alongside their Pro-Wike APC group from further destruction of the Party.”
On his part, Dino Melaye posted two digital posters of Damagum with the comment: “APC Agent of destruction. Go and join your APC in peace,’ and “The Harm you’ve done is enough.”
