Mr Onyekachi Ubani, a former Chairman of Ikeja Branch of Nigerian Bar Association, on Friday condemned the little attention given to fiscal autonomy of the judiciary in campaigns by political office seekers.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that fiscal independence of the judiciary in Nigeria was critical to rapid development of the country across all sectors.
”Those seeking to be legislators after the 2015 elections are not campaigning well enough of their intentions for this country in terms of the kind of bills each will support.
”It is imperative that legislators who seek to ensure autonomy of the judiciary get our support.
”It is not good that political office seekers are not putting justice administration reforms as a priority in their campaigns because right about now judiciary workers are on strike.”
Ubani urged Nigerians to listen attentively to how those asking for their votes would manage the dwindling oil prices in the international market.
He said that only gubernatorial candidates with plans to diversify their state’s economy and make the state less dependent on federal allocations should be given the people’s mandate.
”Many states in Nigeria are owing salaries of workers up to two to three months and this is in relation to the drastic drop in what accumulates into our federation account from crude oil sales.
”There is no short cut to development if elected state administrators do not look beyond the federal grants to grow the state’s local economy,” he said.
