Twitter says it has been engaging with the Nigerian government on the restoration of the microblogging App in the country.
The social media platform was banned in Nigeria in June following the decision of Twitter to delete a tweet of President Muhammadu Buhari which the microblogging App says violated its community standard.
Buhari had referenced the civil war in the tweet, creating the impression that the demand by IPOB for secession could lead to another war.
Twitter has now confirmed that talks have been going on with the Nigerian authorities. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) quoted an official of Twitter who said: “We continue to engage with the Nigerian government and we are committed to charting a path forward to the restoration of Twitter for everyone in Nigeria.
“Discussions with the Nigerian government have been respectful and productive – we look forward to seeing the service restored very soon.”
The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, had listed some conditions that Twitter must meet before it is allowed to operate in the country among which are; set up an office in Nigeria, have a senior managerial staff to serve as a liaison between Twitter and the Nigerian government and register as a legal entity in Nigeria.
