Nigeria’s vice captain, William Troost-Ekong has revealed that the Super Eagles couldn’t have taken the game against Guinea Bissau on Wednesday lightly because they aimed to secure the maximum 9 points in Group D.

The Super Eagles, despite playing the fringe players against Guinea Bissau, upped the ante in the second half and coasted to a 2-0 victory to earn the maximum 9 points in their group.

Nigeria had beaten the Pharaohs of Egypt and the Falcons of Sudan before brushing aside Guinea Bissau yesterday with the goals coming from Sadiq Umar and Troost-Ekong himself.

The Watford defender was named the Man of the Match after his outstanding performance against Guinea Bissau and for scoring a goal in the process.

Troost-Ekong said the gaffer made eight changes but the lads were still able to secure a victory against a side that was desperate to exploit a weakened Super Eagles.

He went on to attribute the win to the decision of the players to earn the maximum 9 points in the group and make a statement that they are in Cameroon to pick the 4th trophy.

“First and foremost I am very happy for the team,” Troost-Ekong told reporters after the game.

“We said before the game we wanted to do something special, we wanted to get three out of three wins and to really make a statement on the tournament so far.

“I’m really proud of the boys, I think everybody performed exceptionally well. It wasn’t easy with eight changes and all the boys who came in, I think they showed they deserve to play as well and that’s probably the biggest message from today’s game, so I’m very content”.
