President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday transmitted the Minimum Wage bill to the National Assembly for consideration and possible passage into law.
The president’s letter which was read on the floor of the House, provided for a new national minimum wage as well as the legal framework for the implementation of the agreed wage.
In the letter, the president urged lawmakers to expedite the passage of the minimum wage bill to ensure immediate implementation for the benefit of Nigerian workers
He also sought the amendment to the Nigeria Police Act in accordance with section 58 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
This is coming after President Tinubu and the leadership of the Organised Labour agreed on ₦70,000 as the new national minimum wage for Nigerian workers last week Thursday.

The truce between the government and labour unions followed a series of talks between Labour leaders and the President in the last few weeks after months of failed talks between labour organs and a government’s tripartite committee on minimum wage constituted by the President in January.
The committee, which comprised representatives of state and federal governments and the Organised Private Sector (OPS), had proposed ₦62,000 while labour insisted on ₦250,000 as the new minimum wage for workers who currently earn ₦30,000 as minimum wage
However, despite its initial insistence on ₦250,000 as the new minimum wage, Labour eventually accepted the President’s offer of ₦70,000.
Following the agreement, lawmakers are now expected to legalise the new minimum wage after the president sent it to them.
