If the 2023 presidential election were to be decided on Twitter, former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, would most likely emerge the winner. On every major Twitter poll, he comes top, and his support base dominates the microblogging App with the capacity to trend anything.
The Obidients, as Peter Obi’s supporters love to call themselves, have curiously united the supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and those of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a battle on Twitter.
The camp of the Obidents is populated by young Nigerians, EndSARS activists and those who blame the PDP and APC for Nigeria’s woes.
The Obidients criticize the candidacy of Tinubu and Atiku, claiming that they belong to the old guards that contributed to Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Atiku and Tinubu’s supporters would also hit back at Peter Obi for vying to be Nigeria’s president without political structures in many states of the country. They say he was a mere adventure to nowhere.
Among those who have criticized Peter Obi and got more than they bargained for, include former Social Media assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, activist, Segun Awosanya, famously known as segalink, former social media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, and many others.
For Reno Omokri and Segalink, after criticizing Peter Obi, the barrage of attacks against them was so intense that they reported the matter to Peter Obi.
For instance, when Segalink called Peter Obi a fraud for investing Anambra State’s money into his family business, he said he got mentally traumatised following attacks from Obidents.
He had said: “ The only fraudster you need to beware of is one that invested State funds in his family business, and admitted same on national TV, but have suddenly become the demigod of the extremist hub.”
Then he went to Peter Obi to rescue him from the onslaught that followed. He said: “HE @PeterObi your supporters have made social media mentally unsafe for citizens expressing their constitutional rights of freedom of expression with cyber bullying, targeted harassment, threats to life and blackmail. This is your brand experience to most now. #ShunExtremism.”
For Reno Omokri, he criticized Peter Obi on ARISE TV. The Obidents then dragged him on Twitter to the point that he also ran to Peter Obi for help.
Tweeting with his handle @renoomokri, he said: “I have just spoken to @PeterObi. I apologise for my comments on AriseTV, and Peter told me to inform the public that certain persons on Twitter and other social media, who have alienated him from so many, do not speak for him or his campaign. He will also be tweeting a statement.”
