Fifteen members of the National Association Of Bauchi State Student Union (NUBASS) were injured on Monday when suspected political thugs attacked them in Bauchi.
The Factional President of the union, Comrade Nasiru Nuhu Cigari, stated this while addressing press conference at NUJ secretariat, Bauchi, on Tuesday.
He alleged that the thugs that attacked his members were sponsored by the Special Assistant, Student Matters, to the state Governor, Comrade Mohammed Abubakar Jibo.
He said, “We were returning back from a condolence visit we paid on the family of the late Ahmed Mohammed Lame (Chiroma of Wunti) when the thugs launched attack on our convoy and injured 15 of my members as well as destroyed two cars.
“The SA Students Matters was behind the attack because the government is not happy with my emergence as the NUBASS president. Earlier, I was denied the nomination form but I was able to get the form with the support of the students affairs and Allah gave me victory at last.
“The governor want to destabilize my leadership because of my close relationship with Senator Ali Wakili and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.”
Nasiru Cigari, who claimed to be the legitimate President of the union, called on Governor Mohammed Abubakar to desist from interfering in NUBASS affairs, saying, “government can not determine the faith of our union. So they should allow us to manage our affairs.”
It could be recalled that NUBASS faction alleged to be loyal to Governor Mohammed Abubakar held its election two weeks ago where Musa Jibrin emerged as the President while on 15th of October Nasiru Cigari who is said to be loyal to National Assembly members from Bauchi emerged as the President of the union in another convention.
All effort to get the SA to the Governor on Student Matters, Abubakar
Jibo, on the allegation proved abortive as his line was not reachable and he did not reply the text message sent his mobile phone.
When contacted, the Police Public Relation Officer of the state command, Mahmud Mohammed, said that he was not aware of the attack but promised to find out and get back to our correspondent.
