Three female students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Uli, Anambra State were found dead in their hostel at the weekend, bringing to five the number of such mysterious deaths of university students within two weeks.

Obidiaso Chidera (200 level political science), Mercy (200 level pharmacy), and Emmanuella, (200 level business administration) were found dead in their room at Igbariam campus by fellow students.

Up North, two students of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete had also been found in a room on 30 August.

The cause of death in COOU has not been ascertained but some people on campus suspect foul play as the deceased were locked in their room from outside.

“The students were locked up in the apartment. When we gained access to the apartment, we found them lifeless with two of them on their beds in the room while the third was found in the kitchen,” fellow students said.

COOU investigating deaths

COOU Public Relations Officer Harrison Madubueze expressed surprise that some students remained on campus after the school had close for the semester.

“The university management received with rude shock, the news of the death of three of our students. At the moment, the date, time, and manner of their death are still uncertain,” he said in a statement, per reporting by Vanguard.

“However, security operatives are investigating the matter and at the appropriate time, they will make the findings public.”

Madubueze added that the university was not aware some students in 200 level and above were still within the university environment because the school closed on 24 August after the second semester examination, and would resume on 1 October.

KWASU students found dead

Two KWASU students, Tobiloba Daniel and his suspected lover, Arewa Abayomi, were found dead in Daniel’s off-campus hostel room.

Both were 200 level students and were writing examinations when they died.

“We suspect they were lovers and became concerned when they were not seen during an examination and for three days.

“It was when some of their friends got to their hostel room outside the school that they found them dead and naked,” a fellow student who spoke on condition of anonymity told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), per Vanguard reporting.

KWASU Director of Relations Saeedat Aliyu said there was no official communication on the matter.

But state police spokesman Ajayi Okasanmi, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed “the information is that the two of them were found dead inside their room and the police were alerted.

“Our officers pulled down the door and they were taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) for autopsy. Investigation into the matter is ongoing.”
