The Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawan, has challenged governors and others lobbying to head juicy Senate committees to rise above petty personal requests that consistently war against the collective interests of Nigerians and the workings of the National Assembly.
He advised lobbyists wanting to be accorded special attention that being the head of parliament and parliamentary responsibilities is far above coming from a particular state or a tribe, but more of a duty to every Nigerian which all the Senators are under oath to uphold at all times.
The Senate President made the declaration during the Grand Reception and Unveiling of Senator Mohammed Sani Musa’s ‘Strategic Senatorial Action Plan’, assuring Nigerians that he would ensure that every segment of the Nigerian populace feels the impact of the 9th Senate.
Senator Lawan, apparently reacting to the Niger State governor’s request that Senators from the state be considered for committee chairman on Works, said that it was beyond him as an individual to decide who occupies Senate committee chairman position.
The 9th Senate needed the support of all Nigerians to enable it focus on the challenges of legislating for the good of all citizenry, he said, adding, “After four months of fierce politicking, it is now time to face business of governance”.
The Senate president praised Senator Sani Musa for the lofty ideas and plans for the people of Zone ‘B’, adding however that, “Niger State would have been better off if Senator Musa were in the Senate before now”.
