The Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has urged the Canadian government to mount pressure on the Nigerian government to pass the electoral bill into law.

The bill has been in the Senate since 2017. It was passed in 2018, but Buhari said he was not going to sign it because the 2019 election was already close.

After the election, the Senate has not made headway in upgradi g the bill to accommodate new concerns on

Tambuwal said in a statement that the electoral bill, if passed, will strengthen democracy.

He spoke through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Muhammad Bello, after the acting High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Nicholas Simard, paid him a courtesy call.

“From what is discernible, the National Assembly is not doing much in that regard, thus the need to appeal to Canada to add its voice to this call and the issues of good governance and transparency in the general administration of the country.

“From what was experienced in 2019, the Act was passed by National Assembly at a time when it could not be signed into law by the president because of either EU or ECOWAS protocol.”
