Barring any last minute change of plans, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, is set to dump the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) between today and Sunday.
It was gathered that Tambuwal, who is the immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, has perfected plans to move out of the ruling party alongside his supporters.
Tambuwal’s anticipated defection is coming barely 48 hours after a gale of defection hit the National Assembly with 14 senators and 37 members of the House of Representatives dumping the APC. Governor of Benue State, Dr. Samuel Ortom, also dumped the APC yesterday for the PDP.
The defection of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and the Kwara State governor, Ahmed Abdulfatah, is said to be on the cards.
Tambuwal defected to the then newly formed APC on October 28, 2014 from the PDP while serving as the nation’s number four man.
He subsequently won the Sokoto State governorship seat on the platform of the APC. It was gathered that the governor has not been happy with the turn of events in APC, hence the decision to move out of the party ahead of the 2019 general elections.
However, there are reports that the former speaker has secured a pact with the leadership of the PDP to serve as the party’s presidential flag bearer in 2019.
According to sources, the declaration for the PDP is expected to be done in Sokoto tomorrow or Saturday and it will be witnessed by some PDP leaders. While it’s not clear whether Tambuwal’s predecessor in Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, will also exit the APC, it was learnt that a handful of the state House of Assembly may follow Tambuwal out of the APC.
