Taliban fighters on the street have been punishing anyone who wears western clothes with reports of flogging being reported.

According to reports, civilians are being flogged for wearing jeans and shirts. One social media post says some boys who were ‘walking with friends in Kabul,’ were confronted by Taliban soldiers. Two escaped, others were held at gunpoint and beaten.

According to Etilaatroz, a local newspaper in Afghanistan, a Taliban official told them that the movement was still deciding on the dress code for men.

Etilaatroz newspaper also reported over the weekend that one of its journalists had also been beaten for not wearing ‘Afghan clothes’ such as full-body gowns, according to a report in the Telegraph.

The Telegraph reported earlier those sales of burqas have surged in the country amid a two-fold increase in prices.

Under the Taliban’s previous rule in the late 90s, men had to wear traditional robes while girls were forced to wear a burqa from the age of eight.

Amnesty International has reported that the Taliban have killed nine ethnic Hazara men after taking control of the country’s Ghazni province last month.

The Taliban are believed to also have killed one regional police chief who stood against the Taliban.
