SWEEP Foundation, the organizer of the Lagos Waste Forum and Lagos Waste Challenge, has announced the six Community Development Committees (CDCs) competing for the grand prize of N1,000,000 in the maiden Lagos Waste Challenge.
The challenge is part of the activities leading up to the annual Lagos Waste Forum, scheduled to take place in 2-3 December 2024.
The Lagos Waste Challenge is a statewide mass mobilization campaign aimed at addressing environmental and waste pollution through recyclable waste plastic pick-up and recovery.
According to Amb. Obuesi Phillips, President of the forum, “The challenge seeks to promote inter-community rivalry in environmental cleanliness, rid Lagos State of recyclable waste materials pollution, and ensure a waste pollution-free, clean, green, and sustainable environment.”
The six finalist LGAs/CDCs include Ikorodu West CDC, Old Ojo, Agbede, Ikoyi North, Egbe Idimu (Alimosho LGA) and Largos Island CDC.
These six communities will compete for the top prizes of N1,000,000, N500,000, and N250,000, respectively from 13th – 26 November 2024. The challenge is hosted by SWEEP Foundation in collaboration with Technoserve, the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, with funding from The Coca-Cola Company.
The Lagos Waste Challenge mobilizes citizens and local communities to take action against environmental and waste pollution.
By promoting recyclable waste recovery and pick-up, the challenge aims to create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable environment for all Lagos residents
As highlighted in a recent report by The Budgit Foundation, polluted public places and poor waste management pose significant health risks to citizens, including respiratory issues, cardiovascular diseases, and the spread of infectious diseases.
The Lagos Waste Challenge is a crucial step towards addressing these issues and promoting a healthier environment for all.
