Every person is born a slave of sin. David recognised his innate sinful condition: Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me (Ps. 51:5). Paul pointed out that prior to their salvation, the saints in Rome were once slaves of sin (Rom. 6:17), underscoring the state everyone experiences prior to regeneration. Further, Jesus explains to the Jews: Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practises sin is a slave to sin (John 8:34). Because every person practises sin (Rom. 3:10-18, 23), everyone is a slave of sin.
Sin is the greatest thing that can enslave a man spiritually. Jesus answered them: Verily, verily I say unto you, whosoever committed sin is the servant of sin (John 8:34)
The thought, which our Lord actually conveyed to those who heard Him, is: whosoever committed sin is the slave of sin.
The truth and fact is that sin, by its own nature and operation, tends to destroy all virtuous force, all holy energy, in any saved Christian or moral being. The excess of will to sin is the same as the defect of will to holiness. The degree or intensity with which any man loves and inclines to evil is the measure of the amount of power to good, which he has thereby lost. And if the intensity is total, then the loss is entire.
Sin destroys the totality of God’s plan for a man’s life. Anyone living in sin cannot see the fulfilment of God’s divine purpose for their lives. And if they do, such is short-lived. Hence, the only way out of spiritual slavery is to follow the following steps:
a. Acknowledge the fact that you are a sinner “for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Roman 3:23).
b. Confess all your sins to God – “He that covereth his sin shall not prosper” (Proverb 28:13).
c. Genuinely repent from all sins,
d. And forsake them all – “for the wages of sin is death…”
e. Turn back totally to God.
f. Get a copy of the bible and read daily (Josh. 1:8; Rom. 10:17)
g. Look for a bible-believing church to attend – “Forsake not the assemble of brethren”.
Spiritual slavery comes through other ways such as:
1. Generational curses
2. Blood covenant
3. Sexual intercourse
4. Evil dreams
5. Evil association
The Bible says, “If foundation be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm11:3).
Signs of spiritual slavery
a. Incessant death in the family.
b. Marital delay despite all effort.
c. Eating in the dream.
d. Being beaten in the dream.
e. Having sex always in the dream.
f. Disappointment at the verge of breakthrough.
g. Almost-successful syndrome.
h. Stagnancy in all areas of life.
i. Barrenness or delay in child-bearing.
j. Strange sickness or diseases beyond medical explanation.
k. Unexplainable hardship.
l. Untimely death of colleagues, friends or associates.
Anyone with any of the above-listed needs serious counselling and deliverance with a prayer of faith by a strong minister or man of God. A prophetic declaration is needed over such a person, so that the root of their problem can be adequately addressed.
