Human Rights campaigner, Omoyele Sowore, has regained freedom after spending some hours in police detention.

TheNiche had reported that Sowore was arrested yesterday while leaving the court premises where he had filed an appeal against a ruling of the Federal High Court that declared Leonard Nzenwa as the acting Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC).

Sowore was the presidential candidate of the AAC in the 2019 presidential election.

Before his release, not many knew why Sowore was arrested except for speculations that it might not be unconnected with his criticism of the government and ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) officials. It turns out that the arrest has nothing to do with the government and APC, but a billionaire, Ned Nwoko.

But in a tweet after his release, Sowore explained that he was arrested on the claim that he defamed Ned Nwoko, the husband of Nollywood actress, Regina Daniel.

Ned Nwoko is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and has recently been ordering the arrest of citizens on the claim that they have either defamed him or his 6th wife, Regina Daniel.

Last year, PREMIUM TIMES reported how the billionaire, in 2015 grabbed 90 hectares of land in Idumuje-Ugboko and used security agents to intimidate members of the community who challenged his acquisition of the land.

In January, Hauwa Saidu Mohammed, popularly known as Jaruma, the famous love enchantment trader, was arrested by the police and charged for defaming Ned Nwoko and his wife, Regina Daniel.

She said after her release from detention. “I don’t know how someone would abuse you and you will abuse them back and then the person will now use the Nigeria Police to bully you, to silence you.

“You’ll take someone’s land, the person will complain and you will send Nigeria Police to arrest them.

“You’ll also take someone’s plantation, the person will complain, you’ll send Nigeria Police to arrest and put that person in prison.

“I paid N10m for a job that was not done and I complained, boom, my own too don land for my head.

“How many Nigerian youths do you want to put in jail?” Jaruma asked Ned Nwoko.

After Sowore’s release, he tweeted: “Released from Nigeria Police Force idiotic arrest and detention. They claimed I defamed a criminal, Ned Nwoko! Useless people. #RevolutionNow #WeCantContinueLikeThis.”
