Shehu Sani claims vindication for having originally expose scandal

Former Senator Shehu Sani has claimed vindication for having originally exposed the scandalous salary of Senators, which was laughed off by critics, but is now buttressed by Senator Kawu Sumaila (NNPP, Kano South) who disclosed this week he is being paid N21 million per month in salary and allowances.

Sani had previously disclosed that each Senator collects monthly running cost of N13.5 million in addition to the monthly N750,000 prescribed by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), but Sumaila stressed the amount has since increased.

“Yesterday [Tuesday], the RMFAC refuted my statement but I’m now vindicated by Senator Kawu Sumaila who confirmed that the monthly alert is N21 million and not N1 million. RMFAC make una mind yourself,” Sani clapped back on X (Twitter).

Sumaila spoke up on Tuesday to contradict RMAFC Chairman Muhammed Shehu who had announced in a statement on Monday that Senators earn N1,063,860 monthly as salary plus allowances.

“My monthly salary is less than N1 million. After deductions, the figure comes down to a little over N600,000 …. Given the increase effected, in the Senate, each Senator gets N21 million every month as running cost,” Sumaila told BBC Hausa.

The latest dust over the hitherto secret salary package of federal lawmakers was raised last week by former President Olusegun Obasanjo who insisted it is “unconstitutional and immoral” for them to fix huge salaries and allowances for themselves in contravention of the law.

Shehu reacted on Tuesday claiming Senators get paid a total N1,063,860 in salary and allowances, explaining some allowances are regular and others non-regular.
