Seun Kuti argued that a law enabling Nigerians to own guns would only translate to the rich killing the poor

Popular Afrobeats singer, Seun Kuti has opposed the calls for the legalisation of firearms in the country.
Insecurity in Nigeria has worsened over the years leading to calls for self defence by citizens of the country, including some former and serving state governors.
According to these states governors, rising cases of kidnapping, banditry, robbery and other social vices will reduce when people are armed and can defend themselves.
Speaking on the development, the Grammy-nominated star disagreed with those calling for legalisation of firearms in the country
In his words, Nigeria is not yet ripe for civilians to use firearms and such a law would only translate to the rich killing the poor at will.

He called for the employment of adequate “security personnel to secure the country”, saying politicians that are pushing for such legislation are doing so for selfish reasons.
Speaking in a recent Instagram live session with fans, Seun Kuti said: “I don’t believe our society is ripe for us to say we want to put guns in anybody’s hands. First of all, it just means that rich children would be killing poor children all over the place. That’s what would happen.
“All you poor children, they will just be shooting you. Any little franca, they will just pull out guns. Whatever arms you can buy, they can buy bigger ones.
“The politicians are talking about arms legalisation because they want to make money from the trade not because they care about your protection. Nigerians don’t need guns to be protected. If the politicians are serious about protecting Nigerians, they can employ enough personnel to secure the country.”
