President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari has been advised to set up a truth commission “to investigate and address all cases of flagrant corruption both past and present with a view to recovering huge sums of monies in the control of past and current treasury looters.
The advice was given by Development Alliance of the Niger Delta (DAND), a group that prides itself as been committed to sustainable development of the Niger Delta region.
Going further, DAND advocated for the strengthening of the anti-corruption and anti-money laundering agencies alongside the review of the criminal justice system “to expeditiously deal with economic saboteurs and corruption cases in the country.”
The group also called for the setting up of failed contract tribunals “to deal decisively with cases of rent seekers who would have collected huge contract sums without delivering such projects to Nigerians irrespective of how highly placed they are.
Convener of the group, Reverend David Ugolor, condemned the violence and destruction that characterised the elections in Rivers State and urged the government to bring those responsible for such acts of violence to justice.
On the Niger Delta, the group urged the incoming administration to, as a matter of urgency “explore useful means to positively engage non-violent youths in the Niger Delta region who have acquired useful technical skills and academic qualifications but are still unemployed and jobless.”
The incoming administration was also called upon to operate an all-inclusive mechanism for dialogue between it and all stakeholders in the Niger Delta region on key policies affecting the region.
