The Senate Committee on Customs and Excise has advocated a review of the ban on the importation of vehicles through land borders.
The upper chamber committee also urged the management of Nigeria Customs Service to expedite process of auctioning seized goods to forestall decay and damage on such goods.
Senator Hope Uzodinma, chairman of the committee, said this in Lagos on Tuesday while inspecting smuggled items kept at Government Warehouse, Ikeja.
Uzodinma, while commending operatives of NCS for their unrelenting anti-smuggling drive evident in the volume and quality of seizures made, said the efforts should not be allowed to waste.
He advised that customs should devise a fast track approach to lawfully dispose the seized items and increase its revenue generation.
The chairman described the subjection of seized automobiles in the warehouses to rust, wear and tear as not the best way to manage the seizures.
Collection of duties from imported vehicles at the nation’s borders, according to him, will increase revenue, create more jobs and reduce pressure on the Customs operatives assigned to anti-smuggling duties.
Earlier, Uba Mohammed, Customs Area Controller in charge of Federal Operations Unit, who took the visiting lawmakers round the warehouses and training college where some seizures were kept, said the unit is basically an anti-smuggling outfit .
Uba explained that his unit was able to curtail the fire incident that affected few seizures on January 4, 2018
