Fire in cargo boat kills scores in Rivers

Fire in a cargo boat leaves many persons dead in Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers State. This is one incident too many on Nigeria’s waterways

The boat, popularly known as market boat, was conveying traders to an unknown destination when it caught fire at Bonny/ Bille/Nembe Jetty at Port Harcourt township area.

The fire, which reportedly started around 10 a.m. on Monday, is still raging at the time of filing this report.

However, the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained but onlookers suspected that a careless smoker may have thrown unspent cigarette into the boat.

Eyewitnesses said a woman and three of her children on board were feared dead.

The Nation gathered one of the rescued occupants was badly burnt.

This is the fifth incident in the State since the weekend.

Eyewitnesses said the double deck cargo boat usually conveys over 50 persons and goods.

The fire was yet to be put out as at the time of filing this report.
