Star-studded premiere of ‘Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’ biopic at Terra kulture

Last weekend, the Terra Kulture event centre was abuzz as Governor Sanwo-Olu, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and members of the Kuti family attended the premiere of Bolanle Austen-Peters’ latest biopic, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. The film, written by award-winning Tunde Babalola, vividly portrays the life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a prominent justice advocate and the mother of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti.

Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti has garnered acclaim for its compelling storytelling, unique characters, and exceptional craftsmanship. The film chronicles the journey of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, from her pioneering days as the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School to her marriage to Israel Ransome-Kuti. Together, the couple fought against oppression and established the Abeokuta Women’s Union, sparking a formidable battle against colonial and traditional rulers. The narrative expertly contrasts Funmilayo’s relentless activism with her roles as a wife and mother, showcasing the resilience of a woman who made history.

Bolanle Austen-Peters, recognized by Forbes Afrique and CNN, led the production, with significant contributions from Joseph Umoibom and Lance Gewer. The film features an outstanding cast, including Joke Silva, Kehinde Bankole, and Jide Kosoko.

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti hits cinemas nationwide today, promising to inspire and captivate audiences with its powerful portrayal of a trailblazing woman.
