NFF’s Director of Competitions, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi has charged the Senior Women’s Team, Super Falcons to rediscover their winning ways when they take on the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in an international friendly in Abuja on Tuesday today.
Super Falcons
The six-time African champions have experienced an uncharacteristic slump in form in recent years, failing to qualify for both the 10th All-Africa Games in Maputo in 2011 and the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and slipping to fourth place (worst outing ever) at the African Women Championship (AWC) in Equatorial Guinea in 2012.”This is the right time for the Falcons to re-invent themselves. We pride ourselves on being the top team in Africa when it comes to women’s football, but the Falcons have been faring poorly in the past few years.”Against Cameroon, they have to throw everything into it, to confirm that they are still the force they were known to be.
They should use the match to announce to the rest of Africa that they are back,” Sanusi said on Monday. The former lecturer and author was particularly unimpressed by the Falcons in two losses to the U-17 and U-15 Boys’ National Teams in recent friendlies.
The Falcons also lost 2-0 each in two friendly matches against world champions Japan in the Far East last year.Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses arrived in Nigeria through Lagos on Saturday and flew into Abuja on Sunday morning. The Lionesses stopped the Falcons from reaching the 2012 Olympic Games in London and also pipped the Nigerians to the bronze medal at the 2012 AWC in Equatorial Guinea.”With the AWC in Namibia also serving as the qualifying competition for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, the time for the Falcons to rediscover their winning touch is now,” Sanusi concluded.Tuesday’s prestigeous encounter at the mainbowl of the National Stadium, Abuja will start at 4pm.
Eagles will make Africa proud in Brazil – Moloto Trott Moloto, a former Head Coach of the Senior National Team of South Africa, Bafana Bafana, has expressed belief that African champions Nigeria will lift the continent’s flag high at the 20th FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil. The former Bafana Bafana boss made this statement as part of a delegation of South African Premier League club, Mamemodi Sundowns on a courtesy visit to the President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Aminu Maigari, on Thursday.”I have absolutely no doubt in the strength, character and capacity of the Super Eagles. You have a strong and vibrant squad, and I believe the Eagles will be ready to fly high in Brazil.”The forthcoming FIFA World Cup is one that will favour African teams. The weather will be good for the continent’s flagbearers, and I see the Super Eagles excelling.”Maigari was delighted at Moloto’s confidence in the Super Eagles, and used the brief meeting to inform the Sundowns’ crew of the readiness of the Nigeria Football Federation to prepare the Eagles adequately for a major impact at the FIFA World Cup finals.”I thank your delegation and I am moved by your confidence in Nigeria football and Nigeria footballers. I am aware that you presently have on your books one of our National Team stars, Ejike Uzoenyi, and I’m also aware that you are aiming to sign more Nigerian players.”The Government and good people of Nigeria are very much keen on the Super Eagles doing very well in Brazil. The NFF is fully determined to ensure the Eagles are thoroughly prepared to make the nation and the continent proud at the World Cup finals,” Maigari said.
