Human rights activist and former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani has knocked the decision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to appoint former Jigawa State governor, Mohammed Badaru as the Minister of Defence.

TheNiche had earlier reported that The president on Wednesday, August 16, assigned portfolios to his Ministers-designate.

Prior to this, Tinubu had sent a list of 48 ministerial nominees to the Senate for screening and confirmation.

The Senate eventually confirmed 45 of the nominees, leaving out former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai; former deputy governor of Taraba State, Sani Abubakar Danladi, and Stella Okotete from Delta State were dropped from the approved list.

After the news that Badaru was assigned to the Defence Ministry made the rounds, Shehu Sani took to his official Twitter handle and criticise the decision, saying Tinubu shouldn’t have given such a portfolio to a politician.

He went on to add that such a sensitive ministry should have been left in the care of a retired military officer with records of accomplishments.

Speaking via his social media page,

Sani tweeted: “In view of the security challenges faced by this country, I thought the Defence Minister should be a retired Military officer with experience and records of accomplishments.

“That office shouldn’t be just political, especially at this time.”
