Former England goalkeeper, Rob Green has queried Gareth Southgate’s decision to keep Chelsea’s Mason Mount on the field during their goalless draw against the US in the World Cup on Friday.

According to Rob Green, it was ‘baffling’ that the midfielder, who didn’t have the best games was not replaced with arguably the most gifted English midfielder, Phil Foden who was an unused substitute in the game.

Mount was one of the England stars who could not make an impact against the North Americans but stayed on the pitch while the likes of Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham and Raheem Sterling were replaced.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after the encounter, Rob Green said, “When England was making the first substitutions I had Mason Mount down to come off. It just didn’t come off for him tonight.

“That doesn’t make him a bad player, it happens. It was baffling that he stayed on for the 90 minutes. It was strange.”

The stalemate comes on the back of a 6-2 win against Iran in their first game and the lure of advancing to the group stage with a game to spare.

England will now hope to win their final group stage game against neighbouring Wales for a chance to progress to the round of sixteen.
