Chelsea needed an own goal and a penalty to subdue a resilient Brentford side at the Brentford Community Stadium and advance to Carabao Cup’s semi finals.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have defeated Aston Villa and Southampton en route to this stage but required penalties to do so.

The Bees are facing Premier League opposition for the first time after defeating Forest Green 3-1, Oldham 7-0 and Stoke City 2-1.

Despite dominating possession and goalmouth action, the visitors found it hard to break down a well marshaled Brentford backline.

However, it was the home side who carved out the better openings before half-time with Kepa Arrizabalaga marking three fine saves to deny Yoane Wissa, Mathias Jensen, and Rico Henry.

The second half started in the same fashion and the hosts were heading for a penalty shootout when Pontus Jannson scored an own goal in the 80th minute to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead.

Brentford were now forced to push for an equalizer but substitute Jorginho doubled the lead in the 85th minute after Fernandez brought down Christian Pulisic in the penalty box.

The win against their west London neighbours, Brentford took Thomas Tuchel’s side to their third major semi-final in 11 months.
