Police, Shiites trade blames over killing of protester

Shiites members have accused the police of killing one of their members during a protest held recently in Sokoto State.

A video released to Channels Television by an eyewitness shows the scene of the clash between the protesters and police officers.

Teargas was shot into the air while some Shiite members throw stones in defence.

But the police denied the allegation they anyone was killed. They insisted that their officers only dispersed members of the group with tear gas to restore normalcy in the Sokoto metropolis.

The state command’s spokesman Mohammed Sadiq told Channels Television that the police only put a stop to an attempt by the group to disrupt public peace along old airport road in Sokoto metropolis.

The police officers then called for calm adding that normalcy has since been restored.

They also urged members of the public to go about their lawful businesses without any fear as adequate security arrangements are in place to forestall any recurrence.
