The police have arrested three men from the Jukun ethnic stock as suspects for last Saturday’s attack on Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, an aide to the governor has revealed.
The suspects were said to be fishermen who were arrested close to the scene of the incident.
Ortom had said that he was attacked by armed herdsmen whom he alleged were members of MACBAN, an association of Fulani cattle breeders.
But a faceless organisation called the Fulani Nationality Movement (FUNAM) had claimed responsibility for the attack on the governor. FUNAM has no face that could be linked to it, making it difficult for any seriousness to be attached to the claim.
Security Adviser to Ortom, Col. Paul Hemba, said the Jukun men were arrested around the scene of the attack.
It is not clear if the police have any other reason for arresting the men other than being close to the scene of the attack.
