Pick coach capable of restoring our glory days, Rufai tells NFF

Rufai urged NFF to take its time in picking a competent coach and avoid the mistake of appointing the wrong manager as it did in the past

Ex Go Ahead Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, has asked the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ensure they recruit only a coach that is capable of returning Nigeria to its glory days in football.

The former Super Eagles safe hand, made the call while speaking with Complete Sports on the way forward after Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar later in the year.

The NFF is presently in the process of bringing in a  new gaffer for the national team after the exit of the interim coach,  Augustine Eguavoen.

The former Super Eagles defender resigned as the manager of the team after failing to secure a World Cup ticket for this year’s world soccer fiesta.

Rufai, speaking on the next step to take after missing out on the World Cup, counselled NFF and Nigerians not to dwell in the past for too long.

“Sadly, the Super Eagles won’t be at the World Cup, however, we can’t dwell so much on it because there are other games or qualifiers ahead of the team,” Rufai said

He urged NFF to secure the appointment of a manager who can return Nigeria to the level it was in the past.

He also advised against deciding in a hurry, saying the association can’t afford to make the same mistake it made in the past while appointing a coach this time around.

He added, “This is the time the NFF must ensure they appoint a competent coach for the senior national team that is capable of restoring the glory days of Nigeria in football.

“The NFF does not need to rush when it comes to this issue because it will be sad if we still make the same old mistake again.”
