Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag got a baptism of fire in his first competitive game in charge, as Brighton beat them 2-1 on home turf in their opening Premier League match of the season.

New signings Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez started for the hosts, with Cristiano Ronaldo – their top scorer last season – on the bench.

Brighton drew the first blood in the 30th minute when Pascal Gross scored from Danny Welbeck’s dangerous pass after a lethargic defending from the Red Devils.

It got worse for the home side nine minutes later when Gross once again found the net, firing in from close range after David de Gea parried Solly March’s initial shot.

United returned with more vigour after presumption and were duly rewarded in the 68th minute when Alexis Mac Allister turned the ball into his own net as he attempted to clear a ball that bounced off Diogo Dalot’s back.

Brighton then held on in the latter stage after withstanding late pressure from the home side to secure their first ever win at Old Trafford.
