Pardoned chicken theft death row convicts finally leave prison, upon Adeleke’s prerogative of mercy
Segun Olowookere and Sunday Morakinyo, the young men sentenced to death for stealing chickens and other items, were on Tuesday released from Kirikiri Maximum Prison, Lagos upon their pardon last week by Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Adeleke’s Public Communication Adviser Olusola Ajala, who confirmed this at a function, said “the freed young man [Olowookere] is on his way to the state.”
He added: “I can confirm to you all that Segun Olowookere, sentenced to death for stealing, has been released from the Kirikiri Maximum Prison.”
“He will be in Osun State any moment from now. He may even join us at the gathering and meet with Mr Governor.
“That is the level of compassion of the performing Governor.”
Monsurat Ajoke Foundation, fighting against abuse of women, children and the underprivileged in society, which had championed the release of Olowookere, had disclosed at the weekend that the documents to secure his freedom would be finalised on Monday.
It was reported on Sunday that the documents for the release of the men would be perfected on Monday for them to be back in their hometown in Okuku latest by Tuesday.
