More than 8,000 Nigerians have signed a petition, seeking the disqualification of popular singer, songwriter and thespian, Olawale Ibrahim Ashimi, a.k.a Brymo, over his recent anti-Igbo comments.

The coordinated of the petition, Charles Ogundele, urged Nigerians to sign the petition to ensure that the singer is stopped from winning an award at the 2023 edition of the All Africa Music Award (AFRIMA)

The singer, who has been critical of the people from the South Eastern part of Nigeria via his social media posts, recently came under fire for his tweet stating that the Igbo presidency will remain a “pipe dream” because of the agitation for Biafra.

He wrote: “Well.. no other tribe seems to have a new country yet… as long as their talks by prominent people from Igboland about Biafra an Igbo presidency will be a pipe dream.”

Brymo in the tweet posted on Thursday, January 5, also advised the Igbos to first aspire for the Vice Presidential position before aspiring to become President.

The petition accused the actor of putting up a series of hateful messages on his Twitter handle against the Igbo tribe in Nigeria and going as far as retweeting a tweet that said that all Igbos are senseless.

AFRIMA nominated Brymo in November 2022 in the Song Writer of the Year category alongside musicians from other African countries and voting is currently ongoing.

Nigerians who felt the singer is not worthy of such an award given his history of hate speeches on social media have continued to sign the petition to stop him from winning the award. Citing his “hateful messages” against the Igbos,

The petition also noted that not winning the award would send a strong message to others like him.
