Napoli’s in-form striker, Victor Osimhen has equaled the 18-year-old record set by former Inter Milan striker, Obafemi Martins, for the most goals scored by a Nigerian in a UEFA Champions League (UCL) campaign.

Osimhen achieved the feat after his dying minute’s equaliser in Napoli’s 1-1 draw against fellow Serie A club, AC Milan in the second leg of their UCL quarter-final clash.

The 93rd minute goal by the Super Eagles forward, brought his tally for the competition this season to five goals, being Martins’ record.

Obafemi Martins netted first time for another Italian side, Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League in the 2004/2005 campaign.

However, despite Osimhen’s record-equaling feat, the Partenopei were eliminated from the elite European competition by their Italian rivals and seven-time winners, AC Milan.

The Rossoneri came into the reverse fixture with a goal advantage from the first leg at San Siro and doubled their advantage through Olivier Giroud’s 43rd minute goal in Naples.

Napoli struggled to break down the disciplined-Milan defence with winger Khivcha Kwaratskhelia also missing a crucial spot-kick for the home side in the second half.

Osimhen’s sensational header was not enough to book a historic semi-finals spot for Napoli, as they were eliminated from the competition thanks to a 1-2 goals aggregate.

The Nigerian international prior to his latest goal, had fired the Naples-based team into the quarter-finals netting twice across both legs.

Napoli after their exit from the UCL, will now turn their attention to Serie A, where they currently hold a 14 points advantage over their nearest rival, Lazio with 8 league fixtures left to play.
